Tips to Help Your Cat Age Gracefully

Tips to Help Your Cat Age Gracefully

As time passes, your cat isn’t getting any younger. Help them through their twilight years with tips to help your cat age gracefully.

Just like humans, cats require a little bit of extra care as they get older. They may not be able to move as well as they could when they were a kitten and they’re more prone to health issues. To help keep your cat happy, comfortable, and graceful in their later years, follow the advice below.

1. Good grooming

Cats love a good groom. They like keeping themselves clean, so it’s not uncommon for your cat to spend several hours each day making sure all their hair is laying the right way.

However, as they get older, conditions like arthritis can make this difficult for your cat to achieve by itself. To help them keep their dignity and charming good looks, spend some time each day doing this for them.

This could include brushing your cat or using a special grooming mitt. You may need to trim their nails as well, since they may no longer spend as much time scratching their claws – which no doubt your couch is thankful for!

2. Keep them active

While you may be tempted to let your cat lounge around and sleep all day, thinking they would prefer it rather than spending time playing, the opposite is actually true. Exercise for older cats is just as important as it is for younger ones. It keeps them mentally stimulated and the exercise is good for helping keep excess weight off. Play also keeps their joints healthier for longer.

3. Invite your vet around to your place

Vet care – no matter the age – is crucial for the wellbeing of your cat. However, we all know how difficult it can be to coax our kitty into their carrier case. And, it’s unlikely that this will improve with age.

If your cat is not fond of a trip to the vet, see if the vet is able to come to you, or if there are times that a virtual visit will work. This will help give you peace of mind that your cat is getting the vet care it needs, without having to put them through undue stress or discomfort.

4. Keep them well-fed and well-watered

As cats age, their dietary needs change too. If you can, it’s a good idea to switch to food specially formulated for older cats. This ensures they’re getting the right amount of calories and nutrients. Some even contain special ingredients designed to maintain joint health and aid mobility.

Another consideration for older cats is making sure they have access to plenty of fresh water. Consider adding a couple of extra bowls around the house for ease of access.

No matter your cat’s age, they deserve lots of love and attention and scratches under the chin. Older cats may seem less active or desiring of attention but often the opposite is true; they’d often enjoy an extra cuddle or a game of cat and mouse.

By following the above tips, and checking in with your vet about any concerns, you’re helping your cat age with grace.
